Leader of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) and Minority Leader of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Ashworth Jack said it was sad to see the appointment of Justice Minister Herbert Volney revoked. He said so moments after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Volney's appointment had been revoked for his role in having the President proclaim Section 34 of the Administration of Justice (Indictable Proceedings) Act 2011 on August 31. Tobago lawyer Christlyn Moore is to be appointed a senator and Justice Minister today. Jack said he fully supported the action of the Prime Minister. "We cannot allow things to continue and walk away from them because of political expediency,"?he said in an interview with reporters at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann's last night. He said Persad-Bissessar had set a good example "also for me as a leader."
Jack said:?"It is sad that we have had to lose a colleague in this way, but I think it is necessary to do what you have to do." Asked if he saw any link between Volney's dismissal and the public perception that the law was proclaimed in the interest of two specific people, Jack said while the population must have some speculation, he did not want to join that group of people. Jack said Moore should be given a chance to do the job as Justice Minister, and although he expected it to be very challenging, she would do a good job. He said Moore should not be debarred from being a minister because she had represented the Attorney General in certain legal matters. Jack said it was good that another woman was serving the nation in the field of politics.
