Cheers and con­grat­u­la­tions rang out at Guardian Me­dia Ltd's head of­fice on St Vin­cent Street, Port-of-Spain yes­ter­day with the an­nounce­ment that its newest re­cruit, Tremaine So­ca Warn­er, had won an Open Na­tion­al Schol­ar­ship for her ac­com­plish­ments at the 2012 Caribbean Ad­vanced Pro­fi­cien­cy Ex­am­i­na­tion (CAPE).

Warn­er, who joined the T&T Guardian on Sep­tem­ber 10, achieved six dis­tinc­tions and two 1s in Span­ish, French, Eng­lish Lit­er­a­ture, Com­mu­ni­ca­tion Stud­ies and Caribbean Stud­ies in both units of the ex­ams. So thrilled was she that on re­ceiv­ing the news, she lit­er­al­ly ran out of the of­fice in ex­cite­ment.

Warn­er said, "I felt elat­ed. I first re­ceived the news from a friend on BBM and I quick­ly called my school to con­firm. The ded­i­ca­tion of my mom, the sup­port of my dad and the com­mit­ment of my teach­ers have all helped to bring me to this point. I am im­mense­ly proud and thank­ful." Warn­er, of Diego Mar­tin, at­tend­ed St Mon­i­ca's Prepara­to­ry School and St Joseph's Con­vent in Port-of-Spain.

She is the daugh­ter of Char­maine Grant and the late for­mer T&T Guardian pho­to­jour­nal­ist and pub­lic re­la­tions/me­dia at­tache to the Min­istry of Arts and Mul­ti­cul­tur­al­ism Rolph IL Warn­er. She is al­so the niece of for­mer Guardian Ed­i­tor-in-Chief Lennox Grant. Warn­er is still con­tem­plat­ing whether to pur­sue a first de­gree in An­thro­pol­o­gy or In­ter­na­tion­al Re­la­tions. At present she re­mains a com­mit­ted cub re­porter at the Guardian as she pre­pares for en­rol­ment in­to an over­seas uni­ver­si­ty in Sep­tem­ber 2013.
