Investigators say a Barrackpore woman survived a brutal cutlass attack by a close male relative only because the blade was dull. Leena Pooran, 39, of Nanan Trace, attempted to block the chops fired at her by the enraged man and was chopped several times on the hands. However, when he dealt what was to be the fatal blow to her neck, the blade could not penetrate her flesh far enough to kill her.
Eyewitnessess say the couple got into an argument while driving along Rochard Road. The man became so infuriated that he stopped the vehicle and got out. A struggle ensued and the man went to his car and returned with the cutlass. He began chopping the woman, who collapsed a short distance away. The suspect quickly got back back to his vehicle and drove off.
Villagers contacted both Penal and Barrackpore police and officers led by Cpl Fareed Khan and PC Andy Narine visited the scene. Up to press time, the suspect remained at large. Pooran was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she was treated and is warded in stable condition.
