A 61-year-old fugitive has died after an altercation with police. According to reports, around 11 pm on Tuesday, a group of officers assigned to the Port-of-Spain CID led by ASP Ajith Persad began searching for the suspect in a remote and mountainous area of Maraval.
Police said after an intensive search, they found the suspect, Kenneth Charles, of La Seiva, Maraval, in a small makeshift shack, which was constructed several kilometres from the nearest roadway. Upon seeing the officers, Charles drew a cutlass and began threatening them with it. The lawmen advised Charles to surrender but instead he reportedly became enraged and lunged at them.
One of the officers drew his service revolver and shot Charles once in the right knee, disarming him in the process. He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he died hours later while being treated. Inspectors Eric Parks, Ramdeen and Caruth are continuing investigations.
