A 61-year-old fugi­tive has died af­ter an al­ter­ca­tion with po­lice. Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, around 11 pm on Tues­day, a group of of­fi­cers as­signed to the Port-of-Spain CID led by ASP Ajith Per­sad be­gan search­ing for the sus­pect in a re­mote and moun­tain­ous area of Mar­aval.

Po­lice said af­ter an in­ten­sive search, they found the sus­pect, Ken­neth Charles, of La Sei­va, Mar­aval, in a small makeshift shack, which was con­struct­ed sev­er­al kilo­me­tres from the near­est road­way. Up­on see­ing the of­fi­cers, Charles drew a cut­lass and be­gan threat­en­ing them with it. The law­men ad­vised Charles to sur­ren­der but in­stead he re­port­ed­ly be­came en­raged and lunged at them.

One of the of­fi­cers drew his ser­vice re­volver and shot Charles once in the right knee, dis­arm­ing him in the process. He was tak­en to the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal, where he died hours lat­er while be­ing treat­ed. In­spec­tors Er­ic Parks, Ramdeen and Caruth are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
