A matter involving a policeman accused of slapping a civilian on the face and falsely charging him with resisting arrest has been adjourned to next year. Constable Richard Kishore, 36, last assigned to the St Margaret's Police Station made his first appearance in the San?Fernando Magistrates?Court yesterday where the charges were reread to him.
Kishore, who was granted $60,000 bail at the police station after his arrest, first appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate last month and the matter was transferred to the San Fernando Court. The charges stemmed from an incident on Independence Day (August 31) at St Margaret's Village Junction, Claxton Bay, which was uploaded to social network sites, showing Terrance Augustine, 40, being slapped and taken away in a police car.
Augustine was taken to the station where he was charged with resisting arrest, assaulting PC Kishore and using insulting language. He appeared before a magistrate and was granted $20,000 bail on those matters. Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan read the charges of misbehaviour in public office and perverting the course of public justice to Kishore yesterday.
Acting Insp Kent Ghisyawan of the Professional Standard Bureau who charged Kishore was in court. Asked if he intends to get legal representation, Kishore said, "Yes." The matter was adjourned to March 2013.
