Facilities at the Chaguanas Health Centre are in need of improvement. This was stated by Chaguanas Mayor Orlando Nagessar who was at the time speaking with the media following a tour of Medical Associates newest facility in the central borough. Nagessar said members of the public had complained that the facility at Montrose was too small and did not have adequate parking.

The mayor said he would be seeking a meeting with Minister of Health Fuad Khan to address the concerns. Nagessar said on the upside, government has decided to construct a hospital with a burns unit in the vicinity of the proposed children’s hospital at Preysal, Couva.

He said the original plan was for the construction of a hospital in Chaguanas. However he said the Preysal facility would be located close the highway and would be better positioned to serve the people of Chaguanas and Couva and all the communities in between.

Nagessar also praised Medical Associates for opening a full service hospital in Chaguanas. He said the facility is the first of its kind in the borough and would service the 100,000 plus people living in Chaguanas. Nagessar said the private hospital would cater to the needs of persons who  traditionally had to seek treatment in north and south Trinidad at similar private facilities.

Chanka Seetaram, one of the directors of Medical Associates said the facility would be opened on October 31 and would offer the services of a hospital in specialised areas including obstetrics and ophthalmology. The facility would have 120 beds and a staff of 150 and operate on a 24-hour basis.
