The Section 34 fiasco has severely affected people’s confidence in the Government and the Opposition. Many who were interviewed by an opinion poll conducted by the North American Caribbean Teachers’ Association (Nacta) blamed the Government more than the Opposition.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s approval rating slipped from 58 per cent in July to 48 per cent, although 66 per cent gave a thumbs up for her quick response to repeal Section 34. When asked if their trust in the Parliament had been eroded as a result of the fiasco, 76 per cent said yes, with seven per cent saying no and the others not sure.

The poll was conducted by Vishnu Bisram who interviewed 500 respondents reflecting the demographics of the population. A Nacta statement stated: “The political leaders and the Government have lost support primarily over their handling of Section 34 with the population blaming both parties for the legislative fiasco.

“The Government has taken a lot of blows over the proclamation of Section 34, even among its own supporters who are disappointed over its passage and promulgation.” Asked if they felt the new budget will kick-start the economy, only 31 per cent said yes with many saying they lost hope in Finance Minister Larry Howai’s ability to turn around the economy.
