A 35-year-old law student yesterday appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate charged with four offences. Giles Clive Phelps of St Clair was represented by attorney Vince Charles when he stood before Magistrate Wendy Dougdeen-Bally in the Sixth Court. Phelps pleaded not guilty to failing to produce a driver's permit, insurance, a breath specimen and parking within nine metres of a corner.
Phelps allegedly committed the offences at Ariapita Avenue on October 21. Minutes after calling the matter yesterday, the magistrate quietly conferred with Charles and the prosecutor before asking Phelps if he had attended law school with her. Phelps replied, "No," after which the proceedings continued.
Telling the court he had yet to obtain detailed instructions from his client, Charles requested a short adjournment. Sgt Edward Edmund agreed and the matter was later adjourned to November 20. The magistrate also regularised Phelps' bail as she granted him $25,000 own bail.
