Sandy set to hit Jamaica

All Caribbean Air­lines flights in­to and out of Ja­maica to­day have been can­celled, ow­ing to the trop­i­cal storm warn­ing which was is­sued yes­ter­day, the air­line said in a flight ad­vi­so­ry on its Web site. A weath­er ad­vi­so­ry post­ed yes­ter­day to the Web site of the US Na­tion­al Hur­ri­cane Cen­tre in Mi­a­mi said a hur­ri­cane warn­ing for Sandy was in ef­fect for Ja­maica.

The Hur­ri­cane Cen­tre said yes­ter­day af­ter­noon that the cen­tre of Sandy would move near or over Ja­maica by this af­ter­noon. The storm is ex­pect­ed to strength­en and be­come a hur­ri­cane to­day. It al­so said Sandy was ex­pect­ed to pro­duce to­tal rain­fall amounts of six to 12 inch­es across Ja­maica and a storm surge would raise wa­ter lev­els along the south­ern and east­ern coast by as much as one to three feet above nor­mal tide lev­els.
