At a news conference at the Chaguanas Police Station on Saturday, Senior Supt Deodath Doolarchan, head of the Central Division, said police nabbed a 16-year-old, of Wayaby Road, Carapichaima, around 4 am on Saturday, and discovered a Beretta .380 pistol in his knapsack.
When police raided the young man’s home later that morning, they discovered an 18-year-old with two 12-gauge homemade shotguns On Friday, two males ages 18 and 19, of Claxton Bay, robbed a video club in Caparo. Police said around 2.30 pm, the men entered the Visual Video Club and held up Ramdeo Ramharat, the owner.
They stole a quantity of cash, and fired a shot at Ramharat when they fled the scene. They escaped in a Nissan Wingroad they stole from Ramharat. A police chase ensued and the men rammed the Wingroad into a police car and escaped into some bushes at Caparo. They were later officers led by Supt Johnny Abraham.
Central Division police have arrested 17 people in the past few days and recovered a number of stolen electronic equipment. Doolarchan said car thefts were on the rise in central Trinidad, with armed robbers targeting high-end luxury vehicles, especially SUVs. He warned motorists not to leave expensive items in their vehicles.
Abraham said the Central Division would not tolerate the spike in criminal activity perpetrated by “elements” from Port-of-Spain. He urged members of the public to report any strange people and vehicles in their communities.
