Two babies die in South
Two women are assisting police with investigations into the deaths of two babies in south Trinidad. In one incident, seven-month-old Nevech Alsop was found frothing blood in her mouth while in the care of a female relative in Marabella. San Fernando police said that shortly after 9 pm on Saturday, Nevech was at the home of a relative in Marabella, when she was placed on a bed to sleep.
The relative left the child for a short time and returned to find Nevech in a standing position, lodged between the bed and the wall with a red substance frothing from her mouth. This was brought to the relative’s attention and Nevech was taken to a doctor’s office in Marabella. She was immediately referred to the San Fernando General Hospital, where the medical officer confirmed she was already dead.
Police, led by acting Cpl Williams, visited Nevech’s home and took the relative to the station for questioning. In the second incident, four-month-old Kalifa Matiste was pronounced dead on arrival at the Princes Town Health Centre after she had trouble breathing.
A 33-year-old housewife of Indian Walk told Princes Town police that around 5.30 pm, she observed that baby Kalifa was having problems breathing. Two hours later, the child started vomiting and she took her to the Princes Town Health Centre, where the baby was pronounced dead on arrival. Post mortems on both are expected to take place tomorrow.
