Archbishop Joseph Harris stands with Dr Brinsley Samaroo after presenting him with the Dom Basil Matthews Sunshine Award on Saturday night in New York.

Archbishop Joseph Harris managed to escape being stuck in the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in New York on Monday. Harris, who attended the 24th annual Sunshine Awards in New York City on Saturday, returned home on Sunday night, via Jamaica. Earlier that day he had celebrated Mass at the Holy Family Church, Brooklyn.

Harris was in New York as a specially invited guest at the award ceremony to present the Dom Basil Matthews Sunshine Award to Dr Brinsley Samaroo for his work in education. A release from Archbishop’s House said during the ceremony Harris also appealed to the Trinidad and Tobago diaspora for assistance to restore the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Port-of-Spain, to its former glory.

He also met several dignitaries, including the Mighty Sparrow and Olympic javelin champion Keshorn Walcott.
