Co-ordinating officer at the T&T High Commission in Toronto, Canada, Capil Bissoon says while Superstorm Sandy left tens of thousands of Torontonians without power, cancelling classes at some schools and making the morning commute challenging, the storm didn't cause as much death and destruction as in places like New York City.
In a statement he said one fatality was reported. He said a woman in her 50s died in the downtown area after being hit by a large commercial sign that had blown loose from its frame and fell. He said a check yesterday with several T&T diaspora organisations in the Greater Toronto area revealed no nationals were affected but as could be expected many experienced loss of electrical power and some inconveniences.
He said the consulate general's office in Toronto and the High Commission in Ottawa remain open for business.
