Local Government Minister Surujrattan Rambachan is touring municipal corporations as part of an outreach programme aimed at delivering better services to communities. Rambachan and a team of officials from the ministry will be at the Couva, Tabaquite Talparo Regional Corporation from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm tomorrow.
There they would be joined by the chairman and councillors of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation to meet with burgesses and address their local government concerns. A release from the Ministry of Local Government said the programme was aimed at delivering better services and creating better communities through the work of the municipal corporations.
The programme of visits is intended to create more personal contact with the minister as well as to promote the intention of the Ministry of Local Government to achieve a more responsive, flexible and speedy approach to the resolution of issues/problems faced by burgesses.
"The programme also emphasises the fact that the functions of local government well executed in a timely and efficient manner will positively impact on the quality of life and promote a closer relationship between citizens and the corporations," the release noted. "This will also promote the Government's desire to create a participatory democracy."
Rambachan has already visited Princes Town Regional Corporation, San Fernando City Corporation, Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, Penal/Debe Regional Corporation, San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation, Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation and the Arima Borough Corporation where works have already commenced and completed as a result of these visits.
