Irate foot­ball fan Go­drey Adams will have to dig deep­er in­to his pock­ets to pay a $2,500 fine for hit­ting lines­man Glen Charles on the head with a bot­tle dur­ing Mon­day's In­ter­col foot­ball fi­nals at Man­ny Ramjohn Sta­di­um. Adams, 53, of Dil Mo­hammed Trace, Pe­nal Rock Road, was or­dered to pay the fine yes­ter­day. On Tues­day, he was or­dered to pay Charles $9,000 in com­pen­sa­tion for his vi­o­lent out­burst.

Act­ing Deputy Chief Mag­is­trate Ra­jen­dra Ram­bachan, who or­dered Adams to pay the fine or serve nine months' hard labour yes­ter­day, said he be­lieved Adams "re­al­ly lost con­trol" at the match. Adams apol­o­gised to Charles for his ac­tion dur­ing the In­ter­col fi­nals be­tween Shi­va Boys Hin­du Col­lege and Pre­sen­ta­tion Col­lege.

"I am very, very sor­ry for what hap­pened. I al­lowed my emo­tions to get the bet­ter of me," Adams said as he faced Charles in court. Charles, a pris­ons of­fi­cer, of Co­corite said, "No prob­lem. I ac­cept your apol­o­gy." Adams ap­peared be­fore the San?Fer­nan­do Mag­is­trates Court on Tues­day and plead­ed guilty to wound­ing Charles.

Adams paid Charles the com­pen­sa­tion yes­ter­day. Adams' lawyer Sub­has Pan­day asked Ram­bachan not to place a fur­ther fi­nan­cial bur­den on his client and to al­low him to main­tain a clean record. How­ev­er, the mag­is­trate said he could not place Adams on a bond.
