Irate football fan Godrey Adams will have to dig deeper into his pockets to pay a $2,500 fine for hitting linesman Glen Charles on the head with a bottle during Monday's Intercol football finals at Manny Ramjohn Stadium. Adams, 53, of Dil Mohammed Trace, Penal Rock Road, was ordered to pay the fine yesterday. On Tuesday, he was ordered to pay Charles $9,000 in compensation for his violent outburst.
Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan, who ordered Adams to pay the fine or serve nine months' hard labour yesterday, said he believed Adams "really lost control" at the match. Adams apologised to Charles for his action during the Intercol finals between Shiva Boys Hindu College and Presentation College.
"I am very, very sorry for what happened. I allowed my emotions to get the better of me," Adams said as he faced Charles in court. Charles, a prisons officer, of Cocorite said, "No problem. I accept your apology." Adams appeared before the San?Fernando Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to wounding Charles.
Adams paid Charles the compensation yesterday. Adams' lawyer Subhas Panday asked Rambachan not to place a further financial burden on his client and to allow him to maintain a clean record. However, the magistrate said he could not place Adams on a bond.
