Infant saved from attacking relative
The 24-year-old man accused of biting off chunks of his baby's flesh during an attack on Sunday is set to undergo a psychiatric and medical evaluation before charges are laid. The cable technician remained in custody up to late yesterday at the Port-of-Spain CID. He was interviewed yesterday by a team of police led by Senior Supt Wayne Boyd.
Police said the investigations were still being carried out to determine the man's address, as they had been given several locations in Morvant, Carenage and Port-of-Spain. Police also went to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, yesterday to interview the doctor in charge of baby Jinayah, whose condition has been described as critical.
Sources close to the investigation said they needed the doctor's report before they could approach Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard for instructions. Senior officials are hoping to meet with him sometime today. The suspect's family has already retained attorney Vitti Furlonge-Kelly.
Police said around 2 am on Sunday, the suspect became angry after he arrived home and found there was no food. At the time, Jinayah was asleep in her mother's arms. Her mother, Tineka Henry, 22, tried to protect the child, but the man grabbed her and bit her on the left cheek and right leg.
Jinayah was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by her aunt, who heard the commotion and rushed to their aid. She was treated and later transferred to Mt Hope.
