The idea that Port-of-Spain vendors are going to Chaguanas to sell on the streets is "preposterous," says Port-of-Spain mayor Louis Lee Sing. He said so in an interview during Tuesday's handing-over ceremony of the Salvatori site, Port-of-Spain, to vendors for the Christmas and Carnival seasons. He was responding to comments made by Chaguanas mayor Orlando Nagessar last week.
"In respect to the issue of whether Port-of-Spain vendors are going to Chaguanas, it is preposterous. The vendors are probably coming from Couva or Debe," said Lee Sing. He said he found it difficult to believe Nagessar knew all the vendors in the country well enough to determine where they came from. "I will ask him to stop making these reckless and insular statements that seem to divide rather than unite," he added.
Lee Sing said each time Nagessar had a challenge in Chaguanas he would describe it as a Port-of-Spain problem. He added: "Recently he spoke about street dwellers in Port-of-Spain going to Chaguanas.
"I wish to enlighten my dear brother that street-dwelling is not a Port-of-Spain problem, but a national and international problem. "It isn't that Port-of-Spain street dwellers are going to Chaguanas, it simply means that people in Chaguanas are having difficulties, and therefore you will have street dwellers."
