Police have launched a manhunt for a 26-year-old convicted murderer who escaped from the Port-of-Spain State Prison early yesterday morning.
According to police reports, around 1.55 am, the prisoner, Darryl "Pipey" Bissoon, was seen climbing the wall of the Frederick Street prison. Investigators said Bissoon escaped from his cell and climbed over the high wall using a makeshift rope made of bedsheets and clothing tied together.
Prison officers chased him but were unable to recapture him. Detectives of the Port-of-Spain CID led by ASP Ajith Persad visited the prison yesterday morning and conducted searches around the city in a bid to recapture Bissoon, who has been described as armed and dangerous.
In a release from Prison Commissioner Martin Martinez, prison officials asked members of the public with information on Bissoon's whereabouts to contact their nearest police station.
Bissoon is 174 cm tall, weighs 120 lbs and has a long face with dark brown eyes. Prison authorities said he has scars to his right shoulder, on the side of his left eye, on his left upper arm and right knee.
