The Water and Sewerage Authority says storage levels at the Arena, Hollis, Navet and Hillsborough reservoirs are now up to long-term averages. In a media release, the authority said the production from these and other surface water sources was critical, as they account for 60 per cent of the total daily production.
However, WASA said the overall supply in Trinidad would be greatly affected by the shutdown of the desalination plant from January 15 to 24, which would result in a loss of 30 million gallons a day (mgd). The authority experiences an estimated daily shortfall of 40 mgd from an overall estimated supply of 223 mgd.
"Customers are therefore given notice to begin changing their water-use habits towards a practice of conservation and water use efficiency. There is also a need for customers to address the problem of household leaks and overflowing storage tanks. "And where customers do not have a proper system of storage in place, one should be established," the release said.
