Deputy Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Mervyn Richard­son in­sists dai­ly wreck­ing in down­town Port-of-Spain will con­tin­ue. He was speak­ing at the Trans­port Min­istry's road safe­ty stake­hold­er meet­ing held at the Hy­att Re­gency Trinidad yes­ter­day. Richard­son was re­spond­ing to com­ments by deputy may­or Keron Valen­tine, who sug­gest­ed that the park and ride sys­tem em­ployed at Christ­mas time should be re-in­tro­duced for the Car­ni­val sea­son.

He al­so sug­gest­ed there should be a halt to the wreck­ing in down­town Port-of-Spain since not enough park­ing space is avail­able. In re­sponse, Richard­son said: "I wish to as­sure that wreck­ing in Port-of-Spain will con­tin­ue un­abat­ed be­cause all we are do­ing is en­forc­ing the law, and we will con­tin­ue to en­force the law.

"Per­sons com­ing in­to the city must know that they must obey all the traf­fic laws. If you want to park, go to one of the parkades or se­cure ar­eas and park your ve­hi­cle and then walk to your des­ti­na­tion with­in the in­ner city," he said. He asked peo­ple not to park im­prop­er­ly or dou­ble-park, warn­ing, "You will be wrecked."

Richard­son said the po­lice po­si­tion on wreck­ing would not change, though he sym­pa­thised with those who be­lieved there was not enough park­ing. Richard­son said he had no ob­jec­tion to the sug­ges­tion of us­ing park and ride for Car­ni­val and would raise the sug­ges­tion.
