Deputy Commissioner of Police Mervyn Richardson insists daily wrecking in downtown Port-of-Spain will continue. He was speaking at the Transport Ministry's road safety stakeholder meeting held at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad yesterday. Richardson was responding to comments by deputy mayor Keron Valentine, who suggested that the park and ride system employed at Christmas time should be re-introduced for the Carnival season.
He also suggested there should be a halt to the wrecking in downtown Port-of-Spain since not enough parking space is available. In response, Richardson said: "I wish to assure that wrecking in Port-of-Spain will continue unabated because all we are doing is enforcing the law, and we will continue to enforce the law.
"Persons coming into the city must know that they must obey all the traffic laws. If you want to park, go to one of the parkades or secure areas and park your vehicle and then walk to your destination within the inner city," he said. He asked people not to park improperly or double-park, warning, "You will be wrecked."
Richardson said the police position on wrecking would not change, though he sympathised with those who believed there was not enough parking. Richardson said he had no objection to the suggestion of using park and ride for Carnival and would raise the suggestion.
