Co-ordinator of local missionary group Is There Not A Cause (ITNAC) Avonelle Hector-Joseph says a team from the organisation will be leaving for Haiti on February 10 to continue humanitarian work at Montrouis. She also said a film, Angel Wings, will be screened next Saturday to mark the third anniversary of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake which devastated that Caribbean nation.
Hector-Joseph, team leader for the Haiti mission, said: "We don't have any timeline. We are just trying to see what we could do to help. We just bought a piece of land and we are going to set up a clinic. We are going back for Carnival to get additional lands and to fence the property there. We have some proposals for funding and in the meantime we will continue doing the mobile clinics."
Asked about the ongoing restoration by NGOs in Haiti, Hector-Joseph said it was still a formidable task. Hurricane Sandy did not help the situation and they did not get any meaningful aid. A lot of the focus shifted from Haiti. Cholera was still a possibility since they never really capped the cholera disaster and there was a problem with sanitation.
"There has been some improvement. But the magnitude of the damage and the position the country was in before are adverse factors in rebuilding and reconstruction. Even though a lot of was done, it still pales in comparison to what needs to be done."?
ITNAC has being doing humanitarian work in the Haitian communities of St Marc, Timourette, Gonaives, Cazeau and Chambrun. They have distributed clothing to children in La Garenne, St Mark and started reforestation projects in Gonaives.
INTAC also established a hospital and a clinic.
