Three suspects linked to a series of robberies were arrested after they opened fire on police officers following a high speed chase in Barrackpore. Investigators said around 9 pm, officers from the Southern Division Task Force received information that a Penal man was held up at gunpoint and robbed of his B12 Sentra. Half an hour later, another man of Barrackpore was also robbed of his B13 car.
Police later spotted one of the cars in Barrackpore. A high speed chase ensued as the three men tried to flee through Borde Narve. Officers called for backup and members of the Barrackpore Police Station responded. As they tried to intercept the vehicle, the stolen car ran off the road.
Three occupants jumped out and tried to run through the canefield. Police followed the suspects but there was an exchange of gunfire and PC Douglas was shot at point blank range. However, his bullet proof vest saved his life. The police helicopter squad arrived a short while later and assisted in capturing the men.
The second stolen car was found a short distance away. The three suspects will appear before identification parades in south and central Trinidad today. Investigations are continuing.
