No nominations had been filed for the post of president of T&T up to yesterday, four days after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told Parliament the election would take place on February 15. Nomination is expected to close on February 5. Several names have been listed as prospective candidates, including former chairman of the Public Service Commission and Police Service Commission Kenneth Lalla and Speaker Wade Mark.
Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley said the People's National Movement has not as yet decided if it will nominate a candidate. Government has not announced its candidate of choice as yet. President George Maxwell Richards' second consecutive term expires in March and the election must be held at least 30 days before his term ends.
