No nom­i­na­tions had been filed for the post of pres­i­dent of T&T up to yes­ter­day, four days af­ter Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar told Par­lia­ment the elec­tion would take place on Feb­ru­ary 15. Nom­i­na­tion is ex­pect­ed to close on Feb­ru­ary 5. Sev­er­al names have been list­ed as prospec­tive can­di­dates, in­clud­ing for­mer chair­man of the Pub­lic Ser­vice Com­mis­sion and Po­lice Ser­vice Com­mis­sion Ken­neth Lal­la and Speak­er Wade Mark.

Op­po­si­tion Leader Dr Kei­th Row­ley said the Peo­ple's Na­tion­al Move­ment has not as yet de­cid­ed if it will nom­i­nate a can­di­date. Gov­ern­ment has not an­nounced its can­di­date of choice as yet. Pres­i­dent George Maxwell Richards' sec­ond con­sec­u­tive term ex­pires in March and the elec­tion must be held at least 30 days be­fore his term ends.
