It was an exciting moment for students of the Mayaro-Guayaguayare Community School at Gran Lagoon on Monday when South African High Commissioner Maureen Modiselle returned to the village to present them with new school uniforms. The high commissioner first interacted with the school last year when she attended an Emancipation celebration hosted by the school in the tiny Mayaro village of Mafeking.
The visit interested Modiselle since she grew-up in a village also called Mafeking in South Africa. Over the Christmas season the envoy visited the Mayaro-Guayaguayare Community School and spent several hours with the children as well as its staff headed by Fanta Mutota.
During that visit all 21 students of the school were presented with gifts of fruits and clothes by the high commissioner. She also presented each student with two CDs detailing the history of South Africa. On Monday, High Commissioner Modiselle accompanied by Thomas Mudau, Counsellor at the South African High Commission returned to Mafeking to make good on a promise of adopting the school. They also presented students with school uniforms.
Modiselle also hinted at making arrangements for exchange visits between students of the Mayaro-Guayaguayare Community School and students in South Africa.
