A 26-year-old Carenage man was wounded in a shoot-out with police near his home on Tuesday night. The suspect, of Seaview Hill, Carenage, remained warded under police guard at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital up to late yesterday. He was shot in the leg, but doctors say the wound is not life-threatening.
Around 10.45 pm, residents of Schuller Street, Pt Cumana, Carenage reported that a gunman was shooting in the air while walking down their street. Officers from the Western Division Task Force responded and confronted him. He reportedly pointed his gun in their direction, so police disarmed him by shooting him in the leg before taking him to hospital.
The police found an illegal Smith and Wesson 9 mm pistol along with 13 rounds of ammunition on the suspect. When he is discharged from hospital the suspect is expected to be charged with possession of the illegal weapon and ammunition, as well as shooting with intent. Police said he did not offer any reason for his random shooting spree to investigators.
Meanwhile, police yesterday seized more than five kilos of marijuana at Cameron Hill in Maraval. Around 4.45 am Maraval police were on patrol at Cameron Hill when they saw a large plastic bag in the bush.
They found it contained five concrete bricks in which bags of compressed marijuana were hidden. The narcotics have a street value of more than $50,000. Sgt Birbal and Cpl Sancho were involved in the recovery of the drugs. (DA)
