While the water supply to thousands of households across the country will be significantly disrupted for ten days from Tuesday, the supply to businesses in the Point Lisas Industrial Estate will remain uninterrupted.
This is according to the Environment and Water Resources Minister Ganga Singh who spoke at yesterday's post-Cabinet news conference at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair.
The disruption to residential and other consumers will be caused by the planned ten-day shutdown of the desalination plant.
But Singh said the Government had a plan to ensure minimum inconvenience to the public.
He said measures were being put in place to ensure that all the schools and public institutions in the affected areas were provided with adequate water during the plant shut-down.
He said in central Trinidad there were 39 schools with a water storage capacity of 195,000 gallons.
"We will be monitoring and ensuring that they are filled," he said, adding that there were 223 public institutions in the same area and "we have a storage capacity of just over 78,000 gallons and that too will be dealt with."
Singh said similar initiatives were to be implemented in all other areas that the water disruption was expected to affect.
"We have done the necessary homework for this ten-day period, a whole new structure to manage this will be dealt with."
Singh told reporters WASA produced a total of 224 million gallons of potable water daily and the scheduled Desalcott shutdown would reduce available supply by 30 million gallons.
He said that meant 196 million gallons would be available to the public and the Government had a plan to provide a continuous and reliable supply of water to domestic and industrial customers.
Singh said that central, south and certain parts of north Trinidad would be "primarily affected" by the shutdown.
