Point Mayor suspicious of UNC Beache’s pro-highway stance

Point Fortin Mayor Clyde Paul is taking issue with UNC councillor for Cedros Fitzroy Beache’s leading a pro-highway demonstration in Point Fortin on Monday.

Paul, who has been agitating for the controversial $7.2 billion highway to start from the borough, said he has suspicions that the government was considering that option, but didn’t want a PNM mayor to be credited with getting it done.

Why else, he asked, would a People’s Partnership councillor protest against his government to propel them to start the project from Point Fortin.

“I don’t understand this. You are protesting something you support. It does not make any sense to me,” he said.

The project was put on temporary hold due to bad weather in December.

It has also faced challenges from Dr Wayne Kublalsingh and the Highway Re-route Movement who are against the construction of the Debe to Mon Desir leg.

Paul also slammed Beache for endangering the lives of Monday’s protesters, mainly CEPEP and URP workers.

He said they could have been knocked down by traffic coming from the many roads which connect to the Dunlop Roundabout.

Paul advised Beache to take care of Cedros business and leave the business of Point Fortin to the people of Point Fortin. He said he would have expected Beache to make proper representation for the people who elected him, as they often came cap in hand for a load of pitch or oil sand to patch their bad roads.
