KINGSTON–A British school­girl has been fa­tal­ly shot while vis­it­ing rel­a­tives in a tiny vil­lage in north­ern Ja­maica. Ja­maica's gov­ern­ment says eight-year-old Imani Green of South Lon­don was stand­ing at a road­side store with fam­i­ly mem­bers when a lone gun­man opened fire. The child was hit in the head and shoul­der and died from her in­juries at a hos­pi­tal.

Three adult mem­bers of her fam­i­ly were al­so shot dur­ing the Fri­day-night at­tack in Dun­cans Vil­lage. They were in sta­ble con­di­tion. Po­lice said yes­ter­day it is be­lieved to be some sort of re­venge at­tack, but in­ves­ti­ga­tions were on­go­ing. Jus­tice Min­is­ter Pe­ter Bunting says the "sense­less killing of a young, in­no­cent child must out­rage all well-think­ing Ja­maicans." The British For­eign Of­fice says it is pro­vid­ing con­sular as­sis­tance and work­ing with lo­cal of­fi­cials.
