Ex-cop found hanging from rafter at his home

A former police constable is believed to have committed suicide yesterday morning after he was found hanging by a rope at his home in central Trinidad.
Rampersad Roopchan, 38, also known as Roger, who resigned last year after over ten years’ service, was found by neighbours around 7.30 am.
He was the father of three aged 19, 17 and six, but he lived alone at Sarju Street, Petersfield Village.
His neighbour Nazeem Khan said another neighbour was on her way to school when she saw him through a window hanging from a rafter.
Khan said when he got there Roopchan was already dead. He said it appeared Khan attached a rope to a rafter, placed his head in a noose and jumped off a empty beer carton.
Roopchan’s son Jiovanni, 17, said he had no idea why his father would want to end his life.
However, Videsh Deosaran who lived next door, said Roopchan came over to him crying on Sunday night, and had been drinking.
Deosaran said Roopchan told him he had had a visit from his girlfriend’s parents.
“He did not say what happen. But he was saying that he fed up with life and I was comforting him,” said Deosaran.
Deosaran said he called Roopchan around 11 pm later that day and he said he was fine. “We did not expect this,” Deosaran said.
Roopchan’s neighbours described him as always being in a happy mood and someone who enjoyed having a drink with friends. Chaguanas police are investigating.
