Man held after crashing stolen car
Police arrested a man moments after he crashed a stolen car on Saturday night. He is expected to appear in court tomorrow charged with the larceny of a vehicle. Police said the owner parked on the Southern Main Road near Busy Corner, Chaguanas, left the car idling with the keys in the ignition and walked a short distance away. Two minutes later, he returned and saw a man getting into the car. After a struggle, the thief drove off in the car.
Chaguanas police, who responded to the car theft, pursued the stolen car until it was crashed into the fence at the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court. The suspect jumped out of the car and ran away, but was acught a short distance from the crash by Central Division Task Force and CID officers. WPC Paulette Elcock is continuing investigations.
Chaguanas police are also investigating a series of car break-ins on Saturday night. Three vehicles, a Toyota Hilux, Toyota Corolla wagon and a Nissan Almera, were broken into and cash and valuables stolen near Club India, Chaguanas. When the owners returned to their motor vehicles around 3 am they found the windows smashed and the items missing. In a unrelated matter, Couva police are searching for two men who robbed a bar owner and two customers on Saturday night.
