Anyone found putting up an illegal Carnival bar in unauthorised areas of Port-of-Spain will face having it broken down, their goods seized and risk being arrested, says Mayor Louis Lee Sing. Lee Sing gave the warning yesterday during a press conference at City Hall.
"I want to advise that no business or organisation, without approval from the city corporation, will be allowed to extend bars onto sidewalks," Lee Sing said. He said they would also not be allowed to put furniture or speakers on roadsides or outside vending booths. He said the intent was to minimise congestion of bands on the parade route.
"We do not have space for people to be congregating on the road," he said. Asked how businesses could obtain approval, Lee Sing said: "There will be no permission granted for these activities. "We are trying to ensure that the bands have a free flow along the parade route. There will also be no street vending at least two blocks before and after all judging points."
Lee Sing also said Ariapita Avenue would be clear of traffic and Murray Street, Woodbrook, would be designated for street vendors and bars. Deputy Police Commissioner Raymond Craig, who was also at the media conference yesterday, said criminals took the opportunity to pounce on unsuspecting people where there were crowds, ie areas with bars and loudspeakers.
"We have engaged stakeholders in discussions to make sure that there will be no congregating at vulnerable points in the parade route," he said.
