Parents of children attending the Mayaro Government Primary School claim they have reached the end of their rope and staged a demonstration outside the school yesterday. They say they are fed up with empty promises made by the Ministry of Education.
PTA president Renee Mc Clashie-Mayers told the T&T Guardian the ministry had failed to repair the school. McClashie-Mayers said the school had been suffering from a plethora of problems including a lack of teachers, and the infant department has been without a teacher for over two years.
The PTA head said the school also had faulty electrical wiring and experienced sewage problems as well. "It's waiting to explode," she said. McClashie-Mayers said pleas to the relevant authorities had fallen on deaf ears. The school has an enrolment of approximately 470 students and 21 teachers. Other parents said they are tired of their children being treated as second-class citizens and pleaded for Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh to intervene.
