Chairman of the Siparia Regional Corporation, Councillor Leo Doodnath, has said that the perception of a culture of low productivity among government's daily rated workers does not hold for his corporation. The T&T Guardian caught up with Doodnath in Cedros while he was on the final leg of his "One Day Meet the Workers Tour" which he conducted recently.
He said the Siparia Regional Corporation was divided into five administrative districts and in each there were about 100 daily rated workers. All in one day, first at 7.30 am, Doodnath met with the workers of the Siparia District at Irvin Park; then at 9 am he was in Oropouche at the Fyzabad Market; at 11 am at the Palo Seco Market; at 1 pm in La Brea at the corporation's sub office; and at 3 pm with the Cedros workers.
Doodnath admitted that the tour was most revealing. "Workers want to work. They are proud of the work which they do. Like us, they want to ensure that the region is kept clean, that drains are unclogged, that there are no overgrown bushes, that potholes are expeditiously patched. "All that they are asking is that they be treated like people. Of course they have grievances, they have complaints, and nothing is wrong with that, and all that I've heard seem legitimate to me, and all of their issues can so easily be attended to.
"It's a matter of communications. So we need to listen, and we need to act. Our workers are our greatest productive resource. We need to take care of them," Doodnath said.He revealed that he would be holding discussions with the CEO of the corporation to have follow up meetings with the workers and to have their officers who are involved in implementation, to be present at these meetings as well.
