Students at the Faculty of Medical Science, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, were traumatised yesterday morning after two gunmen entered a classroom and robbed them of valuables, estimated to be worth more than $60,000.
While classes continued in adjoining rooms, 12 students and a lecturer were made to hand over their jewelry, cellphones, iPads, wallets and laptops, then told to lie facedown on the floor.Confirming the robbery occurred shortly after 10 am, senior police said one suspect had been arrested immediately afterwards. Up to late yesterday, he remained in custody at the St Joseph Police Station.
One student said: "Anyone can enter the hospital. Where the classrooms are located is lonely and easily accessible."Another said: "We are at risk every day and if this can happen in broad daylight, imagine what else can take place.""Security guards are posted at the front car park and at the dean's office. The area where the classrooms are remains free and open to all and classes sometimes go until after 7 pm."
The students said the gunmen entered Building 39, Seminar Room Ten, around 10.30 am and they robbed the group before trying to escape by the back entrance.Although classes were dismissed after the robbery, the T&T Guardian learned emergency meetings were held with hospital officials, teachers and security officers during the evening.Classes are expected to continue as normal today. Calls to Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan went unanswered yesterday.
