Police are once again appealing to the public to use fireworks responsibly because of the threat it poses to homes, people and animals especially pets.Reminding the public that the sale of fireworks was regulated by law, a senior officer in the Western Division yesterday warned that anyone arrested for possession of illegal fireworks would face prosecution.
The appeal followed a fire in Diego Martin on Wednesday night which almost destroyed the house of 46-year-old hairdresser Debbie Hackshaw.Around 9 pm, Hackshaw said she was at home washing clothes when she saw some children playing with firecrackers in a neighbour's yard.
A short while later, Hackshaw's daughter told her a bedroom in their house was on fire.Alerting neighbours, Hackshaw tried to put out the blaze and with their help managed to stop the fire from spreading.Damage was later reported to a bed, chest of drawers and computer, with a total value of $8,700.Up to last evening, fire officers were yet to ascertain the cause of the fire.
