Super Blue

Austin “SuperBlue” Lyons says he’s living a 15th life. He steers clear of his past demons, preferring to concentrate on the new picture he is painting of his life. SuperBlue believes there is good in every one of us, but noted that you must have your guard up, because everyone has their own motive; they come around and want to get by you and get to you by any means necessary.

Q: SuperBlue, when did it all start...this drug thing?
A: (Standing in the backyard of Hotel Normandie while taking a break from rehearsing with the band on Friday afternoon). I cannot document that right now...that was in the past and I want to concentrate on all the beautiful things that are happening to me today, right? That is a nightmare I don’t want to rehash and I could be an exemplar for others to follow…follow suit.

Why should I go back to invoke that spirit? No. It isn’t about ‘Tell your story, tell your story.’ No. I am painting a wonderful picture that is being painted now but they want me to go back and paint that same old picture. No. No way.

SuperBlue, the night of the competition that white angel, to me, represented the God figure...
(Walking off slowly) Angel has no colour, no creed, no race.

As far as you are concerned you are not looking backward, you are looking forward?
(Slightly impatient) Yesterday was history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift…one day at a time. Life is simple you know.. Everybody feel they smart because they have technology at their disposal. No man is perfect so the best business about any business is to leave other people’s business alone.

Do you have confidence in your management team?
My confidence comes with God and every day I am on tests and trials. People need people but some of us take others for granted. And don’t underestimate people...

SuperBlue, like every one of us, we have a gift from God and you having come from where you did...
I don’t know, you tell me...I believe I have life from God and God opened my eyes this morning. Nobody would tell you that life is one nice paved road. Along the way you will find bumps and humps and some of us experience those kinds of obstacles and it is for us to deal with them as we meet them along the way. There are only two things in the world that God cannot do.

Which are?
Sin and fail.

SuperBlue, do you believe you are living a second life?
I am living a 15th life. Why are you laughing, Clevon? This is no joke.

I am sorry. I was not laughing.
(Keeps on walking, the interview being of a stand-up nature.) I cannot vent my secret thoughts because I may have to mash people’s corn and dance around certain things…(voice lowered) To fade away another picture, you understand? I don’t know if I have ample time to complete this new picture but I am hoping to do so while I still have life and strength in me.

Super, where do you see soca going the next, let’s say, 15 years?
I am not looking that far down the road, I am doing what we can do today.

Were you surprised at that outpouring of love and affection on your return to the stage?
No. No. No. There is no second chance to create the first impression and I always say excellence is a tradition and greatness would forever be your friend. I always take time to do my thing and some people run down dollars. I don’t do that. I have respect for money, but at the same time when you put your best foot forward, everything else will fall into place.

What do you think your legacy would be in the world of soca music?
If I were a politician I would look for something different from everybody else and leave with a good name. But you know, Clevon (walking back to the stage where the band is waiting on him), everybody wants the front page and the back page to tell somebody story. There is good in every one of us and you have to have your guard on because everybody has their own motive; they come around and want to get by you and get to you by any means necessary.

Finally, Clevon, you into plenty theatre...tell them Super say so.
