The Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations this year will be all about SuperBlue.Sixteen solid days of activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Point Fortin becoming a borough, will kick off on April 19 at Victor Chin Kit Park and end on May 4 with Pan-on-the-Move, which this year will be rechristened Pan-For-Blue.
The celebration usually attracts over 30,000 visitors, but Point Fortin Mayor Clyde Paul said yesterday: "Borough Day is expected to be big this year, because of the achievement of Austin 'SuperBlue' Lyons."Paul said the borough would give thanks for its icon, SuperBlue, who did them proud by winning the Road March and joint Soca Monarch titles in 2013.He said after the statutory council meeting, he would proclaim Friday May 3, as SuperBlue Day.
He said: "A special thanksgiving service will also be held at the Town Hall in his honour," he said," following which we will do the unveiling of a street sign, near where he was born in Point Fortin."That street, previously called Sylvester Street, will now be known as Austin Lyons Street. We will also turn the sod for a play park, near the Point Fortin Area Hospital, which will also be named in his honour."
At its civic reception April 30, the actual day Point Fortin was made a borough, Super would be handed the keys to the borough, he addedThe mayor said he was also negotiating with Pan Trinbago to culminate the celebrations with a special competition, to be called Pan For Blue, where the participating steelbands will play selections from his vast repertoire.For a list of Borough Day events, see Page B30.
