Police are continuing investigations into the accidental deaths of a 28-year-old mother and her two young daughters who were killed by a car driven by an off-duty police officer in Sea Lots on February 24.
Haydee Paul and her daughters–Ruthie, eight, and Shakira, seven–were killed while walking along the pavement near where they lived after visiting the Central Market. The three other victims of the crash are Amanda Lalla, Abigail Assing and Ryan Rampersad, also of Pioneer Drive.
Lalla and Rampersad remained warded at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit up to late yesterday.Residents held protests for several days and burnt debris across the Beetham Highway.
Minister of National Security Jack Warner and Works and Infrastructure Minister Emmanuel George have promised to consider a walkover for residents.Traffic wardens were posted soon after at Pioneer Drive to assist pedestrians in crossing. The policeman involved in the accident has since been suspended with pay.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Rampersad's mother Pearl said she met with doctors who told her they could do nothing more for him."They said they can't do anything for him any more and they did all they could do. I saw him move his hands up to his chest but they said that is just normal reflex.
"By the grace of God he will walk out of that hospital," she said.Davika Lalla said her mother was moved to another ward and has not regained consciousness.
