Po­lice are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the ac­ci­den­tal deaths of a 28-year-old moth­er and her two young daugh­ters who were killed by a car dri­ven by an off-du­ty po­lice of­fi­cer in Sea Lots on Feb­ru­ary 24.

Haydee Paul and her daugh­ters–Ruthie, eight, and Shaki­ra, sev­en–were killed while walk­ing along the pave­ment near where they lived af­ter vis­it­ing the Cen­tral Mar­ket. The three oth­er vic­tims of the crash are Aman­da Lal­la, Abi­gail Ass­ing and Ryan Ram­per­sad, al­so of Pi­o­neer Dri­ve.

Lal­la and Ram­per­sad re­mained ward­ed at the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal in crit­i­cal con­di­tion in the In­ten­sive Care Unit up to late yes­ter­day.Res­i­dents held protests for sev­er­al days and burnt de­bris across the Beetham High­way.

Min­is­ter of Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Jack Warn­er and Works and In­fra­struc­ture Min­is­ter Em­manuel George have promised to con­sid­er a walkover for res­i­dents.Traf­fic war­dens were post­ed soon af­ter at Pi­o­neer Dri­ve to as­sist pedes­tri­ans in cross­ing. The po­lice­man in­volved in the ac­ci­dent has since been sus­pend­ed with pay.

In a tele­phone in­ter­view yes­ter­day, Ram­per­sad's moth­er Pearl said she met with doc­tors who told her they could do noth­ing more for him."They said they can't do any­thing for him any more and they did all they could do. I saw him move his hands up to his chest but they said that is just nor­mal re­flex.

"By the grace of God he will walk out of that hos­pi­tal," she said.Davi­ka Lal­la said her moth­er was moved to an­oth­er ward and has not re­gained con­scious­ness.
