Po­lice are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the ac­ci­den­tal deaths of a 28-year-old moth­er and her daugh­ters who were killed by a car dri­ven by a po­lice of­fi­cer at Pi­o­neer Dri­ve on Feb­ru­ary 24.Haydee Paul and her daugh­ters–Ruthie, eight, and Shaki­ra, sev­en–were killed on the Beetham High­way near Pi­o­neer Dri­ve, where they lived. The three oth­er vic­tims of the crash were Aman­da Lal­la, Abi­gail Ass­ing and Ryan Ram­per­sad, al­so of Pi­o­neer Dri­ve.

Lal­la and Ram­per­sad re­mained ward­ed at the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion in the In­ten­sive Care Unit up to late yes­ter­day.Res­i­dents held protests for sev­er­al days and burnt de­bris across the high­way.Min­is­ter of Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Jack Warn­er and Works and In­fra­struc­ture Min­is­ter Em­manuel George have promised to look at a pro­pos­al to build a walkover.

Traf­fic war­dens were post­ed soon af­ter at Pi­o­neer Dri­ve to help pedes­tri­ans cross the road.The po­lice of­fi­cer in­volved in the ac­ci­dent has since been sus­pend­ed with pay.In a tele­phone in­ter­view, Abi­gail Ass­ing's sis­ter, Ayesha, said she was dis­charged from the hos­pi­tal on Wednes­day and is in bet­ter health."She is walk­ing with a limp now but she is a lit­tle bet­ter to­day," she said.

Ram­per­sad's moth­er, Pearl, said he is still un­con­scious in the ICU but she hopes for his re­cov­ery.De­vi­ka Lal­la, Aman­da's daugh­ter, said her moth­er has re­gained con­scious­ness but is still in the High De­pen­den­cy Ward of the hos­pi­tal."She is awake. She opened her eyes but can't talk," she said.
