Angry residents of Freeport in Central Trinidad are demanding that contractors stop destroying the roads in the district.They met with Couva South MP Rudranath Indarsingh on Saturday. Indarsingh said six contractors have operations in Calcutta Number 2 Residents complained that heavy equipment is destroying the roads making them impassable.
They told the MP that truck drivers are also driving without due care and attention in one area and they fear that a truck may soon crash into residents and possibly kill them.
Indarsingh said the residents were very "passionate" about the issue and indicated all six contractors attended the meeting and gave verbal commitments to instruct their drivers to be more cautious.
The minister in the Ministry of Finance said he plans speaking with the relevant authorities to have an access road to the highway opened via a tunnel that runs below the highway.Indarsingh said this will allow contractors to use an alternate route and alleviate most of the difficulties residents now face. He said he also informed residents that $27 million has been allocated by Government to rebuild the Calcutta/Balmain Bridge.He said a contract has already been awarded.
