Communications specialist at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Danielle Charles says the ministry had not been informed of any T&T nationals affected by the recent flooding in Georgetown, Guyana. According to Guyanese newspaper Stabroek News, parts of Georgetown began flooding after the floodgates known as the Kingston koker was bashed by water during high tides on Tuesday.
Streets, yards and houses in the area quickly filled with water. However, there were no reports of lives lost or of the value of damage.Charles said yesterday that she would make further inquiries as to whether any T&T nationals were affected but said at the time no reports had reached her.Stabroek News reported that teams from Guyana's Ministry of Public Works were executing the emergency works to stop the flow of water into the canals up to Wednesday evening.
"The water was seen gushing through at a very fast rate, leading to rising levels in Main Street and other areas and in the yards of residents," the report stated."Around ten last night, workers were still installing wooden planks to stop the flow of water and the broken koker door had been removed."The newspaper reported that police had cordoned off the areas surrounding the koker so that the works could be carried out.Ministry officials told the newspaper that the repairs to the koker, once all materials were obtained, would take two days.
