A Mor­vant man who was ar­rest­ed on Sat­ur­day with a gun and five rounds of am­mu­ni­tion, has been de­nied bail and re­mand­ed in cus­tody un­til Fri­day.Rene James, 22, was not called to plead when he ap­peared be­fore Mag­is­trate Melvin Daniel in the Port-of-Spain Fourth Court.James of Sec­ond Cale­do­nia, Mor­vant, was ar­rest­ed on March 16 in the road near his home.

Po­lice on mo­bile pa­trol searched him and re­port­ed­ly found a Beretta 9 mm pis­tol and five rounds of 9 mm am­mu­ni­tion on him.At­tor­ney Richard Clarke-Wills ar­gued that James had been a vic­tim of po­lice bru­tal­i­ty over two days and was the fa­ther of a nine-month-old girl and the sole provider for his fam­i­ly.

Ob­ject­ing to bail, Sgt Stan­ley Joseph asked the court to con­sid­er James' pend­ing mat­ter for a sim­i­lar of­fence, the preva­lence of the of­fence and the strength of the pros­e­cu­tion's case, which he claimed would be "suc­cess­ful." Daniel re­mand­ed James in cus­tody un­til March 22.
