Af­ter sit­ting out of sin­gles ac­tion on the open­ing day of com­pet­i­tive ac­tion, Nabeel Mo­hammed hand­ed T&T its first win of the Ju­nior Davis Cup pre-qual­i­fy­ing tour­na­ment, yes­ter­day, with a three-set win over his Ba­hami­an op­po­nent in El Sal­vador.

Mo­hammed dropped Joshua Turn­quest 6-3, 4-6, 4-6 to take a 1-0 lead against the Ba­hamas. It was a much need­ed win fol­low­ing a dis­ap­point­ing open­ing day fix­ture against Cos­ta Ri­ca in which Elan Mur­ray-Mendez and Je­lani David­son lost their two sin­gles match­es. The lat­ter two al­so paired up and lost in the dou­bles en­counter 6-0, 6-0.

Then, in the sec­ond sin­gles match yes­ter­day, Mur­ray-Mendez, af­ter win­ning in a tight first set bat­tle, lost two straight to see his op­po­nent Shan­non Fran­cis take a 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-4. The re­sult saw T&T and Ba­hamas tied 1-1. The dou­bles match fea­tur­ing Mur­ray-Mendez and David­son against Turn­quest and Justin Thomp­son was com­plet­ed af­ter press time.

To­day, T&T will come up against win­less US Vir­gin Is­lands, while Cos­ta Ri­ca and the Ba­hamas clash in the oth­er Group B fix­ture. The top two teams at the end of the tour­na­ment will ad­vance to the qual­i­fy­ing tour­na­ment. The qual­i­fy­ing tour­na­ment will be held in May, be­fore the Ju­nior Davis Cup is host­ed in Sep­tem­ber.
