After sitting out of singles action on the opening day of competitive action, Nabeel Mohammed handed T&T its first win of the Junior Davis Cup pre-qualifying tournament, yesterday, with a three-set win over his Bahamian opponent in El Salvador.
Mohammed dropped Joshua Turnquest 6-3, 4-6, 4-6 to take a 1-0 lead against the Bahamas. It was a much needed win following a disappointing opening day fixture against Costa Rica in which Elan Murray-Mendez and Jelani Davidson lost their two singles matches. The latter two also paired up and lost in the doubles encounter 6-0, 6-0.
Then, in the second singles match yesterday, Murray-Mendez, after winning in a tight first set battle, lost two straight to see his opponent Shannon Francis take a 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-4. The result saw T&T and Bahamas tied 1-1. The doubles match featuring Murray-Mendez and Davidson against Turnquest and Justin Thompson was completed after press time.
Today, T&T will come up against winless US Virgin Islands, while Costa Rica and the Bahamas clash in the other Group B fixture. The top two teams at the end of the tournament will advance to the qualifying tournament. The qualifying tournament will be held in May, before the Junior Davis Cup is hosted in September.
