A dance troupe from Gujarat in India will give several performances to mark the Hindu festival of Phagwa (Holi) at several locations in Trinidad, according to Indian High Commissioner, Shri Malay Mishra.Phagwa will be celebrated in Trinidad on Easter Sunday (March 31) at scores of locations across the country."This is one of the several benefits coming out of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's goodwill visit to India in January 2012," he said.
Mishra said the dancers would be attired in traditional clothes with the women adorned in traditional ornaments, while the men will wear turbans, spotted with peacock feathers.The dancers will perform the Rathava Tribal Dance, the Dangi Tribal Dance, Mishra Dandia Raas and the Hudo Folk Dance, among others."The Dandia Raas Dance will be performed by male and female dancers with two small wooden sticks in their hands, and it is performed with songs praising Lord Krishna," Mishra said.
The group has performed extensively in India since 2002 on national occasions and in Singapore as well. This is its first trip to the Caribbean region, and it will also perform in Montserrat and in Grenada."These performances will demonstrate Indian cultural strengths and the public is invited to attend all these shows, free," he said."It is our contribution to Phagwa 2013," he added.
