Chairman of the T&T Automotive Dealers Association (TTADA) Visham Babwah is warning about conmen targeting the foreign-used car industry.Babwah said a customer came seeking help after he purchased a foreign-used Nissan Teana in Central Trinidad for $160,000.
The man later saw a television report with a police car bearing the same licence number as his vehicle. Babwah said the man made a report to the Fraud Squad and discovered that the certified copy was bogus and the car was more than six years old.
Babwah, head of P&V Marketing, advised consumers to call the Ministry of Trade for information on reputable foreign-used car dealers or contact his association if they feel unsure.
He said his association received reports from customers ripped off by conmen who took their money and disappeared after promising cheaper cars. He said a cheaper price is one strategy con men are using to defraud their victims. (SB)
