La Brea taxi drivers are planning to hike their fares by $1 from Monday. In a release yesterday, president of the La Brea Taxi Drivers Association Suresh Singh said the fares were increased because of deplorable road conditions, heavy traffic and increased prices on vehicle parts. He said the fares have remained the same for the past four years and taxi drivers were unable to absorb additional costs.
He said commuters who want to pick up groceries would pay $10 extra while fares from San Fernando to Tiger Tank would be $15. All short drops would now cost $4 while all off-route drops would be an extra $2 or more. People wishing to commute from Oropouche to Gulf City will pay $6 while those travelling from La Brea to Dansteel on South Trunk Road will pay $8.
Singh also explained that the official route from La Brea to San Fernando is via the Southern Main Road reaching Gulf City traffic light, through Lady Hailes Avenue or Independence Avenue, San Fernando.
