The women of Sea Lots complained vehemently yesterday that images of the mutilated body of murder victim Oyin Angela Assing were being circulated on social media.Assing, 20, of Pioneer Drive, was found floating at the beachfront in Carenage on Thursday. Her abdomen had been slit open.
Veronica Joseph said, "It's not nice. The picture of the child is circulating and it is not good...They should not do that. It is ridiculous. That make the parents hurt more. Somebody took a picture and sent it. The mother saw it even before she went down there to identify the body."Open Bible pastor the Rev Junior Bedeau expressed sadness yesterday at the murder.
"The mother is too distraught to speak," he said. "I have been in touch with the family. Their head is real hot. They are up and down."Bedeau is close to the community and the Assing family. On March 20, he officiated at a cottage meeting at the home of the Assings, and the late Angela Assing had served him soup after the church service.
She was very protective of her sister Abigail, whose hand was in a cast after the February 24 accident which claimed the lives of Sea Lots residents Haydee Paul, 28, and her children Shakira, eight, and Akasha (Ruthie) Paul, seven. The Pauls and other victims were on their way home from the Central Market along the Beetham Highway when a car driven by an off-duty policeman climbed the pavement and slammed into them. Abigail's middle finger and hip were broken.
Asked about the most recent Sea Lots tragedy, Bedeau said, "I feel sad about the situation. The devil has his work to do and he is trying his best to attack us."The Bible says no weapon that is formed against us will prosper. Not matter what the devil does God's work would go on." Sheldon Beete, a member of Sea Lots Open Bible Church, said, "This tragedy is new. We really feel sad for the family. This is something new. I knew Angela. She was a real nice person. It is so sad."
Bedeau also said a special service was scheduled for the women in the Sea Lots community at 3.30 pm yesterday. He will officiate at Assing's funeral at Laventille Open Bible Church, Eastern Main Road, at 10 am on Wednesday. He also conducted the funeral service for Paul and her children. On Friday, Sea Lots residents staged a protest for a walkover, calling on National Security Minister Jack Warner to build it in the shortest possible time. Efforts to contact Warner for comment yesterday were unsuccessful.
