The Environmental Management Authority is having a second laboratory test the carcasses of corbeaux found dead at the National Heliport in Chaguaramas on Monday. In a telephone interview yesterday, Trisha Maharaj, manager of corporate relations and public education at the EMA, said the other lab will also do tests on crayfish found dead at the Marianne River near Brasso Seco last week.
Tests were initially done by the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) and the results were expected yesterday.Maharaj said, "The IMA were unable to provide any results on the crayfish or the birds and EMA is attempting to move the samples and engage another lab for testing. The IMA told us we could not get any results from the lab tests and we can find out if it is possible to move the samples to another lab."
The Chaguaramas Development Authority also investigated the cause of death of the corbeaux. These tests were done by the Veterinary Lab but proved inconclusive.Research by the EMA revealed that the corbeau is listed as an animal which the public are not permitted to hunt or kill.Under the Conservation of Wildlife Act section 67:01, the corbeau is protected unless a licence is granted for zoos, scientific research or to eradicate vermin.
