Sea Lots residents say the police have not interviewed any witnesses to the accident which claimed the lives of Haydee Paul and her two daughters in Sea Lots on February 24.In an interview yesterday morning on i95.5 radio, acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams said 15 people from Sea Lots had been interviewed and eight statements were recorded from residents, including one person who was at the crossing.
Paul, 28, and her daughters Ruthie, eight, and Shakira, seven, were knocked down by a car driven by a police officer on the Beetham Highway near Pioneer Drive, where they lived. The three other victims of the crash were Amanda Lalla, Abigail Assing and Ryan Rampersad, also of Pioneer Drive. However, Lalla's son-in-law, Marvin Johnson, said: "No one came and interviewed her. She has a broken foot. She is still bedridden and no government representatives came either. She is coming along, and talking."
Rampersad is still in a coma at hospital after suffering injuries to the head.Spokesman for the Sea Lots community Kenroy Dopwell said the police did not interview residents:"We are certain about that, and it has four witnesses that actually saw when the car hit the people.
"He (Williams) can't stand and say that to our face. He probably interviewed about 15 police officers. I am certain they never interviewed nobody. We sent one of the witnesses to Besson Street Police Station and we know the three other female witnesses. One is in a mess right now."
Dopwell said one of the witnesses was traumatised after the accident."She was to cross and something tell she hold back," he said. "We gave the police the names and phones numbers and they havent been contacted up to now," he said. When contacted, Deputy Police Commissioner Mervyn Richardson said the file would be dealt with by next week. He refused to comment further.
