Executive director of School of Business and Computer Science (SBCS) Robin Maharaj says for the first time graduates will be given an SBCS alumni card.He also encouraged them to strive to be leaders while delivering congratulations to graduands and staff at the graduation exercise and cocktail reception at Hyatt Regency Trinidad, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain, on Saturday evening.
Its theme was Learn. Evolve. Read. About 350 of the 600 elegantly attired graduands were joined by their family and friends to celebrate their 2013 academic milestone. Before the formalities, they were treated to steelpan renditions from Daryl Reid. Among those present were Simon Jarvis, deputy vice chancellor, University of Greenwich; Professor Bernie Callaghan, dean of the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Sunderland and Jonathan Jydd, dean of University of London, England.
Maharaj said, "For the first time you will be given an SBCS alumni card. It would allow students to access certain programmes with special discounts."Maharaj added: "A quality education changes us in form and substance. An education helps us to develop personally and professionally. Strive to be leaders in the way you live your lives. The newly-minted graduands must be able to genuine leaders. Remember at the same time the Bible says, 'What shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?'"
Director of Distance Learning of the University of Leicester, Roger Dickson, said the media was an academic discipline.While he maintained the media was an academic discipline and crucial to democracy, he said, "It is not in itself an academic discipline. It draws upon a number of disciplines. It is about critical thinking and questioning which remains with you in the future. The media assists in better political choices."
Congratulating the students he said, "At many times it was you, your books and the computer. Your achievement is considerable. You belong to an elite organisation (SBCS)."
